Judge Refuses To Halt ICE Ops in Minnesota

Judge Declines Immediate Halt

A federal judge declined to immediately block expanded

immigration enforcement in Minnesota, saying the court

lacked time to fully assess the state’s emergency request.

The ruling allows federal operations to continue while further review proceeds.

Legal Challenge

Minnesota, Minneapolis, and Saint Paul sought a

“temporary restraining order,” arguing that a surge of ICE

activity has resulted in unconstitutional arrests, excessive force, and civil liberties violations.

Complex Questions

U.S. District Judge Katherine Menendez said the issues

are “unusually complex” and lack clear precedent,

making a same-day decision impossible.

She ordered expedited briefing, with filings due by

January 19 and January 22, and a ruling expected later in the month.

Ongoing Tensions

State leaders say aggressive tactics have harmed public trust,

while federal attorneys argue the actions are lawful and said

they had “little time” to respond. Enforcement will continue for now,

despite heightened scrutiny following a fatal ICE shooting in Minneapolis.
