Magnitude-5.4 Earthquake Shakes Southern California
A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck Southern California early Monday at 3:18 a.m., startling residents but causing little damage. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the epicenter was about 10 miles northwest of Coachella Valley, along a lesser-known section of the San Andreas fault.
Widespread Shaking, Minimal Injuries
The shaking lasted around 10 to 12 seconds and was felt across a wide area—from San Bernardino to San Diego. Over 80,000 people submitted reports to the USGS. “It felt like a freight train ran beneath the house,” said Linda Martinez of Palm Springs. Emergency officials confirmed there were no fatalities and only minor injuries.
Precautionary Response
Following the quake, several schools in Riverside and San Bernardino counties delayed opening to inspect buildings. Caltrans checked bridge safety, while some hospitals briefly switched to backup power. Southern California Edison reported no major power issues.
Expert Insight and Preparedness Message
The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 7 miles, making it feel stronger. “Even mid-range quakes can pack a punch,” explained Dr. Hannah Lee, a geophysicist at Caltech. Seismologists say this event doesn’t increase the risk of a major earthquake, but it provides useful data.
