If your private parts smell fishy, it’s something you should be
Overview
Many women may notice a “fishy odor” from the intimate area.
It can appear without a clear cause and sometimes goes away
with basic hygiene, such as changing into clean underwear after bathing.
Medical Causes
If the smell lasts or comes with itching, pain, or discharge,
it may signal an infection. A common cause is “bacterial vaginosis (BV),”
which happens when the vagina’s natural bacteria balance is disrupted.
Symptoms include thin gray or white discharge and a strong odor,
often after sex, and it “requires antibiotics for proper treatment.”
Another cause is trichomoniasis, an STI that also needs prescribed medication.
Non-Medical Causes
Odor can also result from poor hygiene, trapped sweat, tight clothing,
or forgetting to remove a tampon, which can cause a very strong smell.
Prevention & Care
Use gentle hygiene, avoid scented products and douching,
wear cotton underwear, practice safe sex, and see a gynecologist if symptoms persist.
